Suzy had a client who decided to take up the Making it happen program. They had an enjoyable time working their way through a program of changes, some large, some small and some trivial. The biggest change of all was to systemise the business. To identify and record what it was that was done - and how it should be done - and to then put all of the systems together into a comprehensive procedures manual. Carrying out this process took up a lot of time, but spread over about 6 months it wasn't too much of a burden. But it gave some instant wins as the staff all started to do things the same way and understand the steps in the chain of events. The business owner found that the staff were contributing more and more to how it should work and changing what they did so that it became more effective - all of which meant that he could take more of a back seat as they did more of the day-to-day running of the business. So he went from doing 60 to 70 hours a week down to about 40! Three years later the business owner can't believe how he ever managed without strong and robust systems. Where he had been a bottleneck in the business and frantically busy as all questions and decisions went across his desk - now he had a much calmer, less stressful time. He had time for the important things in life because his staff were dealing with the urgent stuff. |
